Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a phenomenal fifth grade class at a TK-5 school in Southern California. The school I work at has won California Distinguished School in 2020 and is a finalist for the National Center for Urban School Transformation award. Our students come from low socio-economic backgrounds but they always make the most of what we have. Our school is largely Hispanic with a very large population of English language learners.
Every student enrolled at our school receives free breakfast and lunch daily.
I am constantly amazed, with all the challenges presented to these students each day. They enter the classroom each day ready and willing to learn! I am proud to be their teacher.
My Project
Over the summer I have spent countless hours in my classroom. One of my big projects was to do a classroom library makeover. I went through all the books moving out any dated books and bringing new life to the popular ones. I created a better library book check out system so they will have greater access to books.
In this project, I am requesting some of the very popular titles that will be a great addition to my Fifth Grade class library.
We start the year reading Hatchet so that really hooks them into Gary Paulsen (the author of Hatchet) books. Raina Telgemeier books are on fire right now. Lastly, the national geographic books will encourage more diverse reading genres. Thank your considering to donate to my classroom.
