HiLo Reading Books for English Learners in Queens!
My students need independent reading books for classroom libraries that provide interesting, relevant stories at their reading and language levels. These titles, in Spanish and English, are working well in small numbers, but we need more!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, thoughtful, kind young adults who make our school feel like a true community. They support one another through challenges both academic and personal; they share joys and struggles; they teach and learn from each other, and they do it all across languages and cultures.
We are a community comprised of teachers and students from around the globe.
Our small school in Queens, NY serves newcomers to the United States who have arrived here anywhere from a few years to a few days ago. My students are learning everything in a language that is new to them. They meet this challenge with determination and confidence, and I do everything in my power to provide materials that will assist them as they move towards independence in their learning.
My Project
We recognize the value of choice-based reading in our students' lives. It supports them academically, socially, and emotionally. Many of my students are in need of high-interest books that they can read and enjoy. They are ready to read about the themes and topics handled in YA books, but the vocabulary and story structure of American English YA is in the way of experiencing these stories. These publishers, Saddleback and Orca, have been working on "hi-lo" books for teens. The stories have been accessible to the multilingual readers in our classrooms, and so we are looking to expand our selections. All of our students deserve to fall in love with a good book, and these additions to our libraries will help make that happen!
