I teach children with learning disabilities in grades K - 5 in a very diverse urban school in Winston - Salem, NC. Many of the children I teach live below poverty level. Many are Hispanic. They all struggle with reading and truthfully don't like to read.
Last year, I bought An I Can Read Book at Barnes and Noble right before Halloween. It was called In A Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories. This book was a low level(2)for grades 1 - 3 but had high interest with even my older students. It was a book they could read and enjoy, and the students read it over and over again. They took it home and read it to their families. They just loved it. Their response to this book was so different than any I had experienced before with typical classroom reading books.
My goal this year is to make reading fun and to make reading come alive. I want to develop a lifelong love of reading within each student. I want their reading levels to go up and up. This can be accomplished with great teaching and more low level high interest books that students want to read over and over again, because it is through practice that skills get better.
I am requesting more An I Can Read Books or similar low level high interest books in sets of 6. These books will be read in small groups of 6 or less, with partners, and individually. They will be read by my students this year and many students to come. Thanks.
