My students need more high interest books, such as Owl Diaries and the Who Was ___ Series, in order to strengthen their love for reading as well as their reading comprehension!
I teach the most amazing 4th graders. Our neighborhood school serves students from PK-8 and is located in a very diverse area of our urban city. The students come from many backgrounds and experiences. Many of my students are exposed to trauma on a daily basis, so school is a safe zone for them. We are over 60% free lunch and have many English Language learners. We also educate students with emotion/behavior disorder needs.
My students love to read when there is engaging books for them to access.
They love to laugh, they care for each other, and they love to learn. In addition to the Common Core Standards, we focus on teaching the whole child. We do this by teaching our students to be emotionally literate.
My Project
These highly engaging books will capture the students' interest right away. By doing this, they will fall in love with reading. Avid readers become great learners in all subjects. As they read these high interest texts, they will build decoding skills, use critical thinking and questioning, and grow their comprehension abilities.
They've become interested in learning about real people, especially those who have made a difference in our world.
I hear time and time again: "There's nothing to read!" or "Do you have the next book in this series?" I always want to say "yes!" but I cannot every time, because we don't have the resources. I want nothing more than for these students to have an engaging book with them at all times. Currently the books we have access to are in poor shape and don't interest them.
Having these books not only will create a fuller class library, the various series will give them multiple books to read once they're finished with the first one. They will turn them into readers!
