My students and I work hard on becoming more fluent readers. We practice reading poems and songs and even read using iPads but something that would improve our fluency is being able to read non-fiction from kids like us!
My students come from a high poverty area where they have little to no access to print materials.
They love to get their hands on things that are interesting to them such as dinosaurs and creepy crawly bugs. I know that within my own library books that are non-fiction fly off the shelf.
My Project
My students and I will be using the Highlights magazines to improve our fluency skills, help aid our comprehension and give us more information about the world around us. Students will work in centers with the texts and will be able to have conversations with one another about exciting adventures that others are taking and even learning more about students that are their own age.
I know that when I was growing up, I looked forward to going to a magazine that was written for my own age group and learning about the world around me.
Not only was I reading about the lives of other kids, but I was also reading jokes and poems. It made my love of reading grow. My students will be able to grow as readers because they will be able to find something relevant to their own lives within the pages of the Highlights magazine.
