My students need popular young adult books, such as The Hunger Games, Hatchet, the Goosebumps Horrorland Boxed Set and Maximum Ride, to inspire reluctant readers to read.
Do you remember what it was like to pick up a book you couldn't put down? Many of my students have lost or have yet to discover this love of reading.
My students are very diversified in their educational backgrounds.
Some of my students read at a second grade level and some read at a college level. However, the one thing they have in common is the thirst to learn new things. They attend a school that encourages a family type atmosphere, so the students feel safe to state their opinions and beliefs.
My Project
I have gifted and talented students and autistic students all in the same class. Some children are automatically drawn towards books that our school library just can't keep on the shelves. Other students in my classroom have very specific subjects they like to read about, and a good majority of the students do not like to read because either the joy of reading has been taken away from them or they have not discovered how great it can be to read a good book. I'm in need of popular series books so that my avid readers may finish the series they are reading instead of waiting for the next book in the series to be returned to the school library. Books on particular subjects are also needed and will appeal to my autistic children and reluctant readers who need to know the joy of reading a good book. My goal is to never have a parent tell me that their child will not read a book.
These books will make such a difference in these students' lives.
The more they read, the higher their reading level will rise. As we all know, reading at a high level is a must in every day life.
