We are a unique school in Montana. We believe that our school is where each student's song will soar. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade have helped guide our new school over the last two years to be a student-centered educational home for all. Students take the lead and make things happen. My third-grade students create our community together and bring one another up!
My fourth grade students walk into our classroom every day ready to be writers, readers, mathematicians, scientists, historians, and humanitarians.
They believe in our world and they believe they can change the world to be a more accepting, progressive world, that sees the good in all people. Students are open to having growth mindsets that see practice makes better, not perfect.
My Project
I am a fourth grade teacher, who believes empowering students to make decisions about his or her learning allows students to invest in learning and their future. In our learning community students guide our community from creating classroom norms and expectations, to creating rubrics, running community meetings and even designing their own learning space from the ground up!
Engaging the Brain through Movement!
That is our classroom motto! My students designed a classroom layout that increased student learning in our community by providing more time to move (activating the body) and engage their brain, but they need more options still. They want their classroom to feel like their second home.
In the design, students created a layout that would allow them to move and collaborate more easily. The tool they have requested: tall tables for standing or sitting to work with a partner. Students feel the high top tables will allow more space in the room, so it does not feel crowded.
Our community will use the classroom learning space equipment to make learning flexible and moving. My students would like to purchase the new 21st century tools to help activate all parts of the body while learning. Active bodies equals healthy minds! What a real-world example of students making change that allows more students to work in a environment that is much like the collaborative world we live and work!
