Our goal this year is to make the world a better place by applying what we are learning to a real world problem, and we need the tools to do this. In order to apply what we are learning to the real world, we need to be able to access the world and all of its research tools.
My students are a diverse group of enthusiastic learners who strive to make a difference in our world.
Our suburban California public school serves a community with a diverse population. The students come from a wide range of ethnic and religious backgrounds, but come together to learn and create an inclusive community. We work together to solve problems and learn as a team, and value what we as a community can accomplish together.
My Project
By having access to e-readers that are also powerful tablets, my students will be able to use research skills to help solve real-world problems. Students will be using these e-readers to research a problem that our community faces, evaluate the impact of the problem and then make an action plan to help solve this problem. One area we intend to research is the impact of single-use plastic on the ocean environment. Using the research tools, students will have to access to information that will allow them to use and apply the science and math we have been studying to both further develop these skills and ideas and to address a problem that not only impacts them, but the entire world. These research skills and tools will allow them to not only see themselves as capable learners, but also as people who can change the world.
The development of research skills and application of science and math on real world problems will have an enormous impact on the ability of these students to be good researchers for their further education and professional lives, effective and informed citizens and empower them to make a positive impact on the world.
Who knows - we may even solve a world problem together!
