Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school come from a very diverse community in Boston, and the majority of them are lucky to speak a different language at home. These students are in many cases first-generation Americans, with hardworking parents who sometimes don't see their children until late at night. My students love learning to sing and perform songs from their countries and in their native languages, but the limited instrument and technology supplies put them at a disadvantage.
My adolescent students are extremely hard-working, because they have no choice otherwise.
Many of the kids at my school must take care of their younger siblings after school, as their parents are working multiple jobs. These kids deserve the same learning resources as students in suburban schools, but the reality is that our inner-city school has its resources stretched too thin.
When I am able to incorporate authentic experiences with musical instruments, my classroom comes alive. Students help each other to succeed, they laugh, they ask questions, and they get excited about learning. Unfortunately, there are many times in my class when instruments break from many years of use, or technology is not available due to testing in other parts of the school.
My Project
We live in a time when most students in the US are engaging with technology on a daily basis. Unfortunately, my school's limited resources do not provide a realistic level of technology for learning, and the students may be falling behind because of this. By securing three iPads for music class use only, I will be able to greatly enhance the learning experiences of my students. These can be used to provide individualized instruction, to create student-led projects, to compose music, and endless more capabilities. Schools need to enhance their technology offerings so that students can achieve at the high demands of our ever-evolving world.
