Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine twenty-five kindergarten students joyously singing to celebrate the start of a new day. I get to begin each morning to the sound of their little voices and they bring this energy with them throughout the course of the day as they learn to become proficient in both Spanish and English through our dual language program. We are an Expeditionary Learning school that leads students through the inquiry process to become experts in their science studies!
I teach kindergarten at a progressive, dual language school in Washington Heights, New York.
Washington Heights is primarily a Dominican neighborhood where many of my students are immigrants and speak Spanish at home. I have an integrated classroom, meaning that twenty-five to forty percent of my students have special needs. Despite the various needs of my students, each child is supported to take ownership of their learning and achieve their goals. I believe that it is my job to empower young learners to become change-makers who advocate for themselves and others. My students are incredibly curious and eager to learn!
My Project
A few years ago I had a wonderful project funded to get tablets in my kindergarten classroom. The kids have greatly benefited from using this technology to boost their math, science and literacy skills. In order for my students to continue to use this technology, it's time for an upgrade in the headphone department!
A speaker and headphones will support student independence in my classroom.
Additionally, students in my Expeditionary Learning school are empowered to become experts in their science and social studies topics. They practice their public speaking skills to present their research at the end of every unit to their families and other community members. The microphone and speaker will ensure that they can effectively convey their message to all!
