Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a new public charter school, supplies and equipment are very limited. While I strive to find a low cost alternative to most demonstrations, some require a level of sophistication and safety that DIY demonstrations lack. Big demo's are the "WOW" factor I try to bring to my classroom.
We have students from over 40 local middle schools that feed into the charter high school.
Many of the families work at scientific laboratories in the area and many work on local farms and industry. We have an incredibly diverse population that choose to attend our school for the high level of technology used. In a project based learning environment, we strive to make learning as hands on and as applicable as possible. Many students flourish with the chance to make their learning a creative, fun process and engaging lessons and projects drive our school culture.
My Project
The first item is a high quality vacuum pump necessary for some demonstrations that will not be doable with a small hand-pump. The pump can be used for the "Feather/Penny tube" demo, the "Bell in a Jar" demo and used to create a frictionless airtrack to demonstrate constant motion. The second piece is a variable power supply that can be connected to a variety of equipment to explain the properties of electricity and magnetism. Many variable resistors and voltages support a large number of classroom electrical equipment.
Students need to see key demonstrations that will be engaging and informative.
Having this advanced equipment will expand the opportunity for interesting examples of the laws of physics.
