Help me give my students an engaging literary experience. Students will be introduced to reading selections through a High Tea Talk where they examine, discuss, and choose individual outside reads culminating in a Pizza Box Book analysis.
The majority of my students come from a rural community with high poverty. Nearly 60% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. The high poverty rate in my community means that I work with students who are experiencing homelessness on a daily basis.
These students come to school with the burdens of their situations weighing them down and blocking their roads to success.
The lack of a stable or adequate home, food scarcity, and lack of basic hygiene or school supplies often overshadows their education.
My Project
I am planning a High Tea Book Talk as a way of engaging students as they evaluate novel choices for their outside read projects. This introduction will help engage reluctant readers and get them excited about their choices.
Students will participate in sit down table conversations with their peers as they partake in a British style High Tea complete with tea cups, finger sandwiches, scones and raised pinkies!
At the end of the tea, students will choose their title. They will then complete a 5 week project on the book culminating in a Pizza Box Book Analysis targeting author's craft.
