Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are either fresh out of middle school and trying to find their way in the high school classroom OR are upper-classmen who are challenging themselves with AP classes, applying to college, and trying out new academic subjects for the first time. Some are very comfortable in a classroom setting while others struggle to find space and place in an academic setting.
By having an area of my classroom dedicated to flexible seating - for reading, conferencing, collaborating, and even relaxing at lunch - my students will have options to create their own space; a desk is not always a safe or comfortable space for students, so by providing more options, I can help these young people adapt and relax in an academic setting while furthering their personal goals.
My Project
Not every student comes into a classroom feeling welcome and comfortable, but classroom layout and seating choice can help to change that! A teacher's job is to make every effort to ensure that students feel safe so that they can learn.

Flexible seating - in the form of bean bag chairs and loungers - allows for movement around the classroom, a respite from sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day and a reward and incentive for personal and academic improvement.
The materials requested will become a flexible seating area, perfect for independent reading/work, conferencing between both students and student and teacher, and collaborative projects. Motivational posters will add to the seating area with encouraging and positive words for all students in the classroom. Bean bag chairs, a lounger, and posters sound a lot like the shopping list for a dorm room, but they can also come together to create the perfect environment for high school students.
