This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a high school class in a career and technical school for students interested in pursuing a profession in the education field. My school is classified as a low income school and educates many students from housing projects.
Many of our students lack the opportunity to experience our world outside of their neighborhood, so our teachers and staff try to expose them to as much as possible during our school day through technology, field trips, books, and guest speakers.
Even though our students don't always come with the materials they need to learn, the majority of them come ready and eager to learn!
My Project
I teach 10th through 12th grade students who are exploring a future career in education. In my class, my students learn all that it takes to be a future teacher including writing lesson plans and implementing them in the classroom. In addition to working in classrooms weekly, as often as possible I set up opportunities for them to tutor and read in our local elementary schools.
Since we are a high school classroom and don't have access to materials that most elementary teachers use, we are in desperate need of books for my students to use to read to elementary students in our district.
Although teachers have books in their classroom for my students to use, this gives my students little to no time to practice reading the books before they read to a class. If we had our own set of books, it would give my students an opportunity to practice reading the books. It would also allow them to use them to prepare lesson plans. The markers will help us make the lessons and activities we prepare bright and colorful which will be appealing to young children.
