In a Detroit neighborhood is PHS, alma mater to notables Tim Meadows, J. Dilla, and Spencer Haywood. This epic building of late 19th-century brickwork hosts a beautiful dance studio where my students, the future notables, attend a class every day. These are 14-18-year-old kids, fantastic movers, with immense personality. Great dancers, great students, great reminders that electives work best when children clever kids just waiting to be dazzled.
In our classes, we study dance as an expressive art form, movement as exercise, and respect for bodily autonomy.
On the dance team, we are focused on building a sustainable program founded on sweat, smiles, and teamwork.
At P. High, we have a few problems; dress code availability, fundraising, school spirit, and ownership. As a sponsor for the Positive Behavioral Intervention Service (PBIS) and the National Honor Society (NHS), I believe an opportunity exists here. With an in school heat press, vinyl cutter, and some school colors, we can create and produce our own line of spirit wear.
Students can show off their Doughboy Pride in the halls, create T-shirts for clubs and teams, and be able to print on demand for much needed spirit wear.
Imagine a student of the week or class hype day? Going on a field trip? Let's make matching shirts. We will be able to find students in a crowd as well as be ready for that photo op. By cutting out the middle man, our students will be able to fund raise while gaining excellent business experience, preparing them for a future they will need to create.
