Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My runners range from high school record holders to brand new long distance runners. These kids work hard everyday. They are eager to be better, they are open to new fitness programs and want to keep on improving.
My school is a Title I, International Baccalaureate World School, located in an urban neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles, California.
This community is full of school spirit, rigor and talent. There are over 2,000 students and about 60 % of the population receives free or reduced lunch.
The team is showing great promise - it will be an exciting season! My female runners, in particular, are what I call beasts! They are 4 time city champions and are chasing a chance to compete at the state-wide championships!
This community is very special to me; I grew up here and was student-athlete at this wonderful school. As a teacher and coach here now, I want to make sure my students and runners have what they need to have continued success this cross-country season and beyond!
My Project
My students are running everyday - either on long distance runs through the neighborhood or on the track. The heat makes for great beach weather, running in it is a whole other story. In this Los Angeles heat, these kids show up and push themselves every practice to get ready for the season.
My students will be using these foam rollers before and after practice. These foam rollers will be carefully stored in our weight room and students will be trained how to properly use them to roll out their tight and over-worked muscles.
My runners are disciplined and I know they will take care of these new tools and use them consistently. I can see our older students, take on leadership opportunities, once they've been trained and lead stations of foam rolling for our younger students.
I'm hoping we can get funded so my runners can ease muscle tension for all those miles their legs take on.
Foam rolling breaks down knots that limit range of motion, increases blood flow and releases muscle tightness that can interfere with proper running form. Foam rollers can be overlooked for only rehabilitation use - but as research has shown, they will be very beneficial for my kids! Please donate!
