Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The books in this project will help to enrich my classroom library!
My hope for my classroom library is that it will be full of books with diverse character representation that reflects the identities of my students, that it will be full of stories from around the world that will broaden my students' worldviews, and that it will be full of books that inspire a lifelong love of reading in my students.
My students love seeing characters who represent their own diverse identities and have already expressed to me that seeing such books in my classroom makes them feel more seen, welcomed, and comfortable on campus. This is precisely my goal in cultivating such a collection. As a US History teacher, I want books that represent the diversity of Americans, particularly the immigrant experience in the US, as many of my own students can relate to such stories. I am also the advisor for my campus GSA club, so it is especially important to me that my LGBTQ+ students are exposed to books that celebrate who they are.
I also hope to cultivate a collection of books with stories from around the world that will help my students develop empathy and understanding of different cultures. As a World History teacher, I am excited by any opportunity to broaden my students' understanding of the world. Many of my students have never left our small town, so I want to show them that they can travel and gain new experiences through reading.
Finally, I want to encourage my students to simply love reading. I believe education is activism and that increasing literacy and a love of learning will have a lasting impact on my students' lives, in a radical and positive way.
