My students need 11 copies each of four engaging young adult novels for Book Club.
I wish my students loved reading. I wish my students chose to read for pleasure. I wish my students felt comfortable opening a book. I want to sprinkle my students with the magic stardust of literary rapture!
I am the librarian of a mammoth urban high school in California.
More than half of the student body hasn't yet demonstrated literacy proficiency as evidenced by the state tests. Only about three quarters of our students pass the Exit Test, which is required to graduate high school in California. I visit with the same sparse group of students in the library everyday! What these academic statistics say to me is that a huge chunk of our students do not read with any enthusiastic regularity.
Therefore, I am requesting some sets of compelling novels to encourage participation in a weekly Book Club at lunch in the library. It is my hope that if I expose our students to interesting books that are written with the teenager reader in mind and provide these students with the support of a weekly literary program, I might convert a throng of students to the religion of recreational reading.
I hope you are as inspired by my goal as I am and more importantly, I hope you are interested in helping me encourage young readers.
It takes a whole community to educate our youth, and I am deeply grateful for the support of DonorsChoose and its philanthropic family of donors!!! Thank you for considering my literary proposal to help our future society become more literate and more engaged in the ecstasy of reading!!!!
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
