My high school has a wonderful book club that meets monthly during lunch to discuss books. The teens love getting together to discuss ideas and literature that interest them. It can really broaden their perspective and get them involved in issues that they don't normally engage in.
Two years ago, the San Francisco Public Library started this book club during lunch time in our school library. The teen librarian had a grant to provide lunch and books to the teenagers. Bringing pizza really drew the students in and they got to keep the books they read. That grant ended but we are still struggling to keep up the book club without a budget for books.
We would now like to buy 15 paperback copies of the same book and keep them to be re-used every year for four years for a new group of book lovers. If we bought five different titles every year and kept them in a box, we would have four years' worth of books.
Students have already read "Animal Farm", "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time", "Jade Green" and many others. We show them some examples and they vote on genres and titles they would enjoy reading for pleasure. Then we work on gathering the books.
Book Club is an established club at my high school and the students are enthusiastic about reading and the privilege of eating in the library once a month. But we need your support to buy more books so we can keep the club going!
