Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, I'll be teaching math and science to fifth graders. My students are eager to learn and express themselves. They love to write and talk about their feelings and experiences, as well as make connections between their lives and what they're learning.
Many students may not be comfortable with math and science, and I want this to be the year that changes for them.
I seek to make students feel confident about mathematics, science, and school in general. I look forward to celebrating their successes with them!
When students have what they need to succeed, they can approach learning with greater confidence. Many of my students may not feel confident starting a new school year, and worrying about paying for new school supplies can be an additional burden on a child's family. At times, students who do not have the supplies they need refuse to participate in class activities because being unprepared lowers their confidence. Knowing that some supplies are going to be provided for them allows students to come to school every day with a clearer mind.
My Project
Even though my school is in a low-income area, we still ask families to bring in school supplies for each of their children every year. Often times, students are not able to bring in all of the supplies that we ask for because school supply shopping for them and their siblings is a financial burden on students' families. In their math and science classes this year, students will be needing to use pencils and composition notebooks every day and it is important that they have materials that will hold up for the entire school year. Ticonderoga pencils and composition notebooks are high-quality materials that will be utilized and cherished in my classroom every day.
