High Poverty School: Reading Incentives for Struggling Readers

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at our school are amazing. They walk into the classroom every day with a smile and always have positive words to say. Our school is 95% LatinX, 82% of students are low income, and 23% are English Language Learners.
The goal of this project will be all about rewarding students with positive incentives.
This project will be directed to in-person learners and at home learners.
My Project
These materials will be used in our Accelerated Reader Store. Because we are a high-poverty school, an AR store is going to give access to some amazing prizes for kids, regardless of status. Students will earn Accelerated Reader points and then will be able to spend their points to purchase high-interest incentives.
These materials are low point values so that everyone has access to a prize.
In turn, this will help motivate our most reluctant readers. The materials that are being asked for will be used to engage learners back into reading in a fun way.
The learning outcomes that these materials will contribute to are a school-wide literacy focus in order to help our students grow from third/fourth-grade readers into middle school level and beyond readers.
With a large English Language Learner population in our building, having these small prizes will motivate ALL readers.
We hope to expand learning to the home by allowing students to check out books that they see spotlighted throughout the school.
