This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are pushing to be successful readers this year. This is an accomplishment that only 5% of students were able to achieve the year before. We are working hard to increase that percentage by 75% at least!
Students Who Achieve Greatness (S.W.A.G.)!
This is what we live by in our 3rd grade classroom. Everyday students are pushed to be the best possible readers, leaders, and achievers that they can be. My students are extremely invested in our goals for the year, however, they have so many things stacked against them. We are located in a 'not so old' charter school in one of the most poverty stricken areas in Miami-Dade. Violence is very much a reality in the community and many students only feel safe and secure inside the classroom. This is one of the reasons in which I hope to create one of the most safe and engaging learning environments possible. Our class is ready to take on the challenge of reading despite coming in with many deficiencies. Books are starting to become 'not so scary' after all.
My Project
The leveled library will help my students boost their reading levels. Currently we have a few battered up, well-used text. The library will range from a 1st to 4th grade level. That way every students can find the book that's 'just right' and progress to more difficult levels as their ability strengthens.
The headphones are essential for students to be able to use the computers. Currently we have computers with reading programs but no way to use them due to the problems with volume. Parents were asked to provide students with headphones however I have received many notes from regretful parents stating that they cannot afford to purchase them.
The comprehension games will take the most complex reading issue that students have and make it fun. Unfortunately, some of my students associate reading with failure and thus they dread it. Having games will have them increase their skills while showing them that reading can indeed be exciting!
Reading is essential to be successful in life.
Over the years there have been studies that estimate that kids who are behind in 3rd grade reading are 4 times more likely to drop out. Furthermore, in the state of Florida students may be held back for up to 2 years if they are not able to pass the end of year reading test. The lack of resources in our classroom is disturbingly evident. Please help change the lives of my students by providing access to what every child should have: books.
