My students are a great group of kids. They are well behaved, fun and full of surprises. You wouldn't know that some of them come from broken homes with only one parent or no parent and being raised by a grandparent. They love to learn in spite of all the turmoil that some of them face.
Being from a low economic area and without some of the financial support from parents and community, my students love to learn and enjoy learning everyday.
My Project
Students need the basic tools for school each and every day, such as pencils, crayons, and glue. In first grade these items are used everyday for developing their fine motor skills and eye hand coordination.
I remember as a child going to school knowing I was getting new pencils, crayons, scissors and my other new tools, it was so exciting.
I want my students to have that same feeling. These items will be waiting for them on their first day of school. They will be using them each and every day of first grade. We of course, write everyday. We also do a lot of coloring and cutting and pasting.
Most of my students are not able to purchase these items. They get a clothing allowance for clothing but nothing for the school supplies that they need. They have to depend on getting it from the school or use what they have from the last year. I want them to have NEW items to start their new year.
