I love that my 6th graders are kind, bright and eager learners. Like any child their age, they are friendly and fierce competitors but know in the end they're really only competing against themselves and their academic growth. They own it. They know they CAN DO HARD THINGS!
They learn that LITTLE CHOICES MATTER!
Every day. Jokingly nicknamed "Storytime" -- they can easily recall stories shared in class. Real-life applications to lessons are key in my class - how some people can live off interest (Math), how often authors were turned down (JK Rowling), the effects of weather (Science). They empathize with characters in books or history and revere unselfish heroes like Irena Sendler who stood for good. Each year, they are challenged to make their beds for a week after watching a favorite speech, surprising their parents and themselves with how choosing to make their bed can affect other areas of their lives. They know choosing to make education a priority over other things is their choice and they are the ones rewarded for it! We work hard & play hard!
My Project
M.U.S.I.C. = Music Unlocks Self-Expression, Intelligence & Creativity. Studies show the benefits of a music education to be a positive and important resource towards learning in all subjects.
If it's true that 20% of students learn to play a music instrument, and 70% of adults wish they had - why not start simple?
Some students have never touched a musical instrument. Simple handbells and sheet music can make a difference! Math (counting, problem solving), Language Arts (note reading, memorization, voice), Science (analyzing, describing), Social Studies (social skills, community), Art (creativity) -- and so much more takes place with music! Most importantly, students will learn the valuable life skills of overcoming challenges, practice and patience, and steps required towards achieving a goal. Sharing one's talents by performing is a memorable event.
Yoga has also been found to be a beneficial activity. Concentration, calmness and relaxation is improved. It increases their flexibility, coordination and confidence. It's both healthy and non-competitive. Having blocks available to students for a brain break, Fun Friday option or other event will be helpful.
