High Noon Tea: Manners and Muffins

My students need a gift book (30 copies of "Chicken Soup For Little Souls"), stickers, markers, and journaling supplies for a project that teaches character education.

My Students

Manners have almost become a thing of the past with many of our young people. Our girls who have struggled to be on their best behavior look forward to a "tea party" at the end of the school year. We try to give a new book, have the girls dress up, and give them the opportunity to be "fussed over".

The girls attending the Tea Party are third graders.

Sadly many of them do not even own a dress for dressing up. Thankfully we have ten dresses they may borrow so not to feel left out. We are a uniform wearing school and many of the children also get their uniforms from charitable organizations. Our school has Pre-K to 6th grade, and this makes the tea party very special. The girls look forward to third grade and having a special event helps them with their character education. We believe in the success of every child no matter what their economic condition is. Our school is in a urban area and is also a community school.

My Project

Giving the girls a wrapped new book is a joy all by itself. There are many of the girls who do not have books at home. This year we would like for the girls to make journals and begin writing about their goals, hopes and dreams. Creating with them their own personal keepsakes goes along with making them feel special. Journaling has become its own self-help therapy as long as you have the materials. We plan to give each girls their own supplies so that they may continue to express themselves. Many of these girls have little "personal belongings" and anything we can give them enhances how they feel about themselves. As we begin the journaling process our goals are to highlight good citizenship, thought-provoking writing, and creativity. Believing in themselves and feeling their worth in their family and community is what we are hoping this activity will do for the students.

Being thankful is one of the most important character traits we teach our children.

You are owed nothing in this world and anything given to you is a blessing. Yes, many of our children have had to rely on donations in the past. It is their reaction that helps me to seek out partners to help. Gratitude and knowing that someday they will be able to give to someone else.
