Ralph W. Emerson stated "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow." 75% of our 5th graders do not have high leveled books accessible at our school to read. In order for them to grow as well, we are in need of more high level novels!
While almost 90% of our students scored a 3 or 4 on our EOG, many of our students lack a love for reading, which is a part of being life-long learners.
We do not have the books necessary for students to choose novels they are interested in reading at their appropriate level. With more self-selected novels at their independent reading level, we hope to instill the love for reading.
My Project
Having these resources will allow students to be inspired by a book, identify with characters, and "get lost" reading. The amount of books we have available do not satisfy this need. Students may have a choice of one to two books they would like to read, but then must resort to reading books they are not interested in. Readers must be engaged in order to learn and grow.
This will make a huge difference in the lives of not only our students this year, but also for years to come.
Students will always need the choice of books to read. Our goal is to turn non-readers into reading fanatics! We can only do this by providing high-interest fictional texts at students' independent level!
