My Students

My small Title I school serves approximately 350 preK-5th grade kiddos who come from diverse backgrounds and who all could use some encouragement to develop a love for reading! They often approach new books or genres with extreme skepticism, and I am constantly challenging students to keep an open mind about reading. If they think it's boring, they just haven't found the right book for them yet!

My Project

Our school library has an average age of 2005, which means that we have many outdated books in our collection. I've recently weeded over 100 outdated picture books from the 1970s-1990s that our students were never interested in trying to read, and I'd love to be able to replace those with updated, high-interest options for them! I've chosen books with popular book characters and some graphic novels that students have been requesting in order to appeal to as many future readers as possible.

Many of the books selected also support students' social and emotional needs, with stories about friendships, sadness, and accepting yourself as a person who makes mistakes.

I'd love to have a library collection that targets emotions and how to handle the big ones in life, as many of our students struggle in this area. These books will be available for students to check out and take home with them and can hopefully spark conversations about healthy coping strategies and ways to be a good friend.
