This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students can't get enough of certain books. Put a high-interest book in their hand and they won't want to put it down. As their teacher, it's a great feeling. Unfortunately though, there are not enough of these high-interest books in my classroom.
I teach in an ICT classroom where 40% of the students have disabilities and the remaining students are general education.
Most of the students are English Language Learners and the majority of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. They are great students who work hard. I strongly believe that the achievement gap can be overcome and I see it firsthand in my classroom with the progress that the students are making. Our school focuses on an inquiry approach to learning as opposed to just teaching students procedures. This is especially important in helping to develop their critical thinking skills.
My Project
My students will use these books during reading workshop. Everyday, we have an independent reading block where students read for at least 45 minutes. However, most students are not able to engage in sustained silent reading for this long of a time period because the books are simply not engaging enough for them.
This project will help my students because it will enable them to have a love for reading.
As adults when we go to the library, we make selections based upon which books seem most interesting to us. When students are unable to find interesting books in their classroom library, it makes them reluctant to read. These books will help to reinvigorate their love of reading. Your donations are greatly appreciated.
