High Interest, Real Life, New York Times Upfront Magazine Subscription
My students need 70 subscriptions to a real life, non-fiction, high interest New York Times Upfront Magazine that they can read in print but can also access its online component.
My students come from many different countries across the globe. They speak multiple languages and have unique traditions and practices that I love to learn about from them first hand. Their experiences are both incredible and harrowing, and yet we all come together in the same classroom to find comfort, education, and a positive environment.
What makes these students so special is that they all have something to teach each other, and they always have something to teach me.
In a world of new technology always at our fingertips, it's meaningful for me to teach them about my love for books and how books always help us learn something new. I don't want books to be a foreign object to them, and a fun and inviting book can teach them incredible lessons on so many different levels.
My Project
Our 9th grade students have a stronger goal this year to keep them on track to graduate in four years. Our initiative includes building stronger relationships with adults through a brand new advisory class for only 9th grade students, as well as the drive to keep them interested in their classes by providing options in reading topics. Another aspect of our initiative is to make sure students are given extra help in math and reading, including SAT prep for our 9th grade students. The New York Times Upfront magazine is a reputable and very helpful resource that would provide these SAT style reading passages as well as independent reading activities, high interest current event articles, and all kinds of graphics, pictures, articles, and topics that would expose students to new areas of learning and a variety of text and media exposure.
Since our massive budget cut at the end of the last school year, we had to do away with our beloved New York Times Upfront magazine subscription which came packed with individual copies, an online component, classroom posters, and a teacher's guide to help with lessons.
This was a resource used by more than one teacher. It is a helpful addition to the ELA curriculum but can also be used in social studies and art classes. It is a fantastic resource for lower level learners who need a boost in confidence and skill as they can choose any article to read that interests them.
New York Times Upfront Magazine is something the students and teachers miss having in our classrooms and would act as a vocabulary component, current events addition, and can definitely be used to track data about the students based on independent reading length and number of words read.
