This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We have an array of talented students that hail from the rich backdrop of the Mississippi Delta. They are cut from a special type of cloth; they just have not realized it yet. My students are highly intelligent students who need that extra boost in their morale to believe they can achieve. Our School District is a Title 1 school and ninety percent of the students are in households that fall within the below poverty line. Over 90 % receive free lunch. Although, it is stressed that education is important and can take you anywhere; many feel it isn't true. The educators and administrator stress the importance of education everyday by simply telling them, showing them through instruction and through action!
My Project
Sometimes, it is a struggle to get my students to have a desire to read. Of course, all teachers want their students to read complex texts that are classics; however, when a teacher encounters reluctant readers, steps have to be taken to move them into being strong readers. I really want to focus on students who are reluctant readers by ordering novels that have relatable subject matter.
Engaging students first with novels that interest them allows the teacher to gradually release them into more complex texts.
An array of different texts helps build capacity and reading stamina; which ensures lieteracy growth for students!
