Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is part of District Reference Group “H” which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in.
As an 8th grade ELA teacher, I have witnessed the great needs of my students.
A high percentage of the students who attend my school are on free and reduced-price lunch and struggle to have other basic needs met as well. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body and the lack of funding for resources, especially when it comes to technology.
The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures and often do not have the support available at home that allows them to succeed at higher levels. Many students are struggling to learn the language while trying to complete their eighth-grade work. The students themselves are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.
My Project
I have a number of students who are disengaged in school for various reasons. It can be because they failed two or more classes in one semester, or they miss more than 25 days of school in one year. It is a challenge to reach these students but this project is one way I am going to try.
The books requested in this project are ones that my students have requested.
Because they have already shown an interest in these books, they will be more likely to read them. By supplying students with independent reading books that are interesting to them, my students will become more engaged in school. The more they read, the more progress they will make in their reading skills, which will help them in all subjects. This progress will help my students gain the confidence they need to become engaged in school again.
