This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Every day we read books as a class and answer questions from factual to high level thought. However, my students do not enjoy reading on their own, as it is such a struggle for them. These books will allow them to experience reading as a joyful endeavor and begin to pick up high-interest literature.

My students have beautiful minds and are interested in books that reflect their lives and the lives of others in their communities.

They need as many resources as possible to spark their interest in independent reading. Without these materials, they lose access to vocabulary and literature that their non-disabled peers access naturally. I hope to use these materials to continue to develop the love of reading in my students who try the hardest and struggle the most to enjoy books.

My Project

My students will use these books to independently read in school, build their at-home library, and read over the summer so that they do not lose the skills they have worked so hard to gain throughout the school year. These books will both fill our classroom library and will go home with my students for the summer to build independent reading in homes that often lack literacy resources for my students. These books will allow kids to pick books that are accessible to them to read in their free time and at home. This will give them needed vocabulary exposure and access to literature that is usually closed to them. Please support us in getting these high-interest, low-readability books for our classroom!

This project will make a difference in giving a student that dislikes reading an opportunity to engage with material that they are truly interested in and that is at their reading level.

You will be giving them a chance to enjoy literature in a life-giving and self-esteem building way, as they will be able to access and truly find delight in these texts.
