Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students read far below grade level. The challenge is finding literature that they are capable of reading while keeping them engaged.

My students come from families where reading has never been a priority at home.

Many of my students have come to my high school English class never having read a book. I have noticed that my students excel when reading literature that deals with issues that they experience and for which they have interest.

My Project

As a teacher, it is exciting to have reading material that my students don't want to put down. It is my hope that they will find the passion to read as I did when I was young. In order to create that literary fire, I want to expose them to engaging reading material like Perks of Being a Wallflower. I plan to have students respond to the literature through daily writing responses and an essay analyzing the book after we finish reading it.

This project is so important to me because I feel students need to read literature that reflects their lives and interests.

It is my hope that reading this book will create excitement for reading.
