Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are freshmen to senior students with disabilities. Some of my students have physical disabilities, some have learning disabilities. All of my students are motivated and have a desire to progress and succeed. My students attend small group classes with me for all academic subjects, and they join their peers in general education classes for Health, PE, and electives such as Art and Photography. I am very lucky to be their teacher, they are a kind and focused group of students who enjoy learning and take their education seriously.
My Project
I would love to fill my classroom library with novels that my teenage students, many of whom are struggling readers, really want to read! What do they want to read? Graphic novels! My current classroom library is small, and it can be difficult to find books at a level my students can read, that appeal to teen readers. Graphic novels are popular and they are very reader friendly, they make my students excited about reading, and that in turn makes them read more and results in more reading progress!
These graphic novels will make a positive impact on the relationship my students have with reading.
Having these books will give them some time to learn that reading is a pleasure, not always just an assignment or "work." As my students voted to ask for these novels, I already know that they will be excited to "hit the books" when they arrive!
