High-Interest Nonfiction Is NOT an Oxymoron!

Help me give my students exposure to compelling, novel-length nonfiction through the purchase of a class-set of In Cold Blood.

My Students

This project is designed to create a class set of books for my AP Language and Composition students. This class is open to a mixture of students in tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. These students are hard-workers and are highly driven and competitive.

I'm going to sound ancient, but "back in my day, " only a select few of academically gifted students were permitted to join AP classes.

I am happy to relate that now, the course has been made available to all students... even if they have struggled in classes in the past. As long as a student is willing to really put effort into the class, they are welcome. It is thrilling to see students who really thought they would never be able to work on a college-level course finding their footing and excelling.

My Project

Many students find nonfiction text to be complex and dry, and my hope is by pulling in this novel-length piece of nonfiction, they can see how fascinating this form of writing truly is.

Access to quality novel-length nonfiction is challenging, but oh-so-necessary.

As I help to prepare my students for the AP exam they take in the spring, I would like to use this text to highlight some of the main components they will see on the test. The structure of the text and Capote's word choice make this a prime example of quality writing. The key to this class is analyzing a writer's choices (rhetoric), and I can think of no other text that leaves a profound impression on the reader and holds their attention at the same time. I feel that this text will be ideal, and I can't wait to put it in the hands of my students.
