Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
T.J, or PATRIOT NATION as we call it, is home to Madera Unified School District's Newcomer Academy Program for 7th and 8th grade. A Newcomer is defined by the program as someone who has been in the United States for 12 months or less and is learning English in an academic setting for the first time. This year, our culturally-diverse class is made up of 22 students from around the world.
Students in the Newcomer program represent five countries (Mexico, Venezuela, Honduras, China, and Yemen) and speak five languages (Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Zapotec, and Mixtec).
My Project
I have made this Donors Choose page in order to apple for the $1,000 CVCUE Mini-Grant for a DESIGNATED ELD classroom. With this grant, I would like to purchase the GO! WELCOME NEWCOMERS TWEEN LIBRARY (3 EACH OF 28 TITLES, 140 VOCAB CARDS + TG) for $749.95. These books and workbooks are great resources for Newcomer students who are starting school in the United States for the first time. Newcomer students must learn English to fit in both social and academic settings. The majority of my Newcomer students read below a second-grade reading level and don't enjoy reading books that are typically written for early-elementary students. Additionally, most school textbooks are written at grade level, which is very challenging for my students, so I must find resources or ways to differentiate the curriculum. I plan to use these books, workbooks, and vocabulary cards during daily literacy stations in my classroom.
The GO WELCOME NEWCOMERS TWEEN LIBRARY SET by Saddleback Education Publishing gives teenage English learners high-interest, real-world information and fictional stories written at low reading levels.
The books are written for students to increase reading fluency and math numeracy, while also assimilating with success.
