Our middle school has goals for students that center around their "words read" that semester and year. These words are tracked and displayed on televisions throughout our school. Students get to go on field trips based on these goals, and are denied those same trips if they are considered off track. This system has been an amazing way to incentive reading for students and get books in their hands.
Our students have fully embraced this competition.
They argue over who has the most number of words read, who can be a millionaire (read 1,000,000 words), and what book they can get their hands on next.
My Project
We require that students read independently for an hour an day. After students read, they take a quiz on what they read. If they pass this quiz, it counts towards their words read goal. This works for most of our students.
As the English Language Arts learning specialist, I work with many students who are considered struggling readers.
Reading independently for many of my students can be really daunting. It is sometimes hard to find a novel that is both high interest and on their independent level.
I have found that graphic novels never fail. Students fight over the limited amount of graphic novels we have in our school library. More then once I have gotten my hands on what I thought would be a new graphic novel for a student on my caseload, only to hear that they already read it! This project is to get six copies of multiple graphic novels to pass out to students to read independently.
