Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students make me feel proud. They go above and beyond to show patience, kindness and encouragement to each other. They have learned this life skill through stories and discussions surrounded by respect for each other in class.
They all come from different economic backgrounds with a wide range of needs academically and socially, but somehow we are an inclusive family.
I am an ELAR teacher and books have been a very powerful tool for building an inclusive classroom culture.
My Project
Having my students read diverse books and graphic novels will develop empathy by helping students relate to people who are different from them. I have seen struggling readers pick up a graphic novel that deals with a social issue and not want to put it down. They want to do research on their own on the topic or find more books relating to the true stories.
Images are powerful.
The art in graphic novels makes it easier for readers to relate to the characters and imagine how it would feel to be in a similar situation, which builds empathy and social awareness.
