Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many students see reading as a chore that is assigned to them. They rarely see a choice in what they read. However, I aspire to guide my students in selecting books that they can enjoy while improving literacy.
Our students attend a NYC Title I high school (which means that our students come from low-income homes).
Many of our students have special needs and/or are English Language Learners. They enter high school believing reading cannot be enjoyable. During their 9th grade year, our school encourages independent reading through a "Drop Everything and Read" class. To make this class successful, students need additional high interest books for our classroom library.
My Project
These books are all highly recommended for teens who are struggling and resistant readers. Since young adults learn primarily through social interactions, having multiple copies of high interest books will provide opportunities for students to participate in book clubs. Therefore, fostering a community of reading for pleasure and open discussion about literature.
This project will make students' reading experiences positive, engaging and memorable.
It will not only support students' literacy skills, but inspire a life long passion for reading.
