Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle school is located in a very small, rural, farming community. We have a very high free and reduced-price lunch rate population, alongside a high migrant student population, and English Language Learners. This creates many inequities in the learning process. Students need extra support in most courses due to these many factors.
Our goal, as educators in this unique community, is to try and bridge the gap caused by socioeconomic status, migrant living, and being English Language Learners.
Students who live a migrant lifestyle will often have numerous gaps in their learning due to changes in schools, standards, and expectations from place to place. Many of our students also spend time traveling from family to family and have extended periods of time spent outside of the U.S. where there is no public education. Our school is in major need of support for these students with special needs.
My Project
I would like to build my classroom library. With this project your donation would help build my classroom library and fill it with high-interest, low-leveled books for my middle school students. As a school we encourage students to be reading daily, and since many of our students are English Language Learners we have a duty to build their reading skills. We have built independent reading time into a daily program at the middle school to help ensure that this takes place.
One problem is that my personal classroom library is lacking high-interest books for my lower-level readers.
Many ELL students who struggle to learn English do not want to pick up what they think are baby books, however their reading abilities are not strong enough to pick up typical middle-school-level books. This means many students pick up books that are too challenging for them and they never complete them because it is too difficult. Help me reach my lower-leveled students with books they want to read and won't be embarrassed to hold in front of their peers!
