High-Interest Books Lead to Highly Interesting Conversations
My students need high interest, recently-written books that spark their curiosity and engage them in high-level talk.
This project expired on January 5, 2017.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Everyone loves a good book, and my students in ninth grade English are no exception.
When my students discover great literature, they are eager to think and to question and to talk.
However, traditional school books don't always grab their attention. They want stories that speak to their experiences, that keep their eyes glued to the page, that will make them encounter new worlds and perspectives.
These are the types of books that encourage them to think critically and engage in academic talk.
My students will be able to choose from among these wonderful books and then engage in literature circle discussions with their classmates.
They will have multiple opportunities to explore the complex ideas in the books in order to promote their high-level literary reasoning.
They will engage in online discussion boards prior to their in-person book group meetings. They will make connections between these books and other texts, including articles, poems, and the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
These opportunities will allow them to think deeply about the text, to ponder life through great literature, and of course, to become better readers.
