Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our five fifth grade classrooms are home to 135, curious, lively, hardworking, and fantastic fifth graders. Our kids all have varying interests and abilities, including English Language Learners (our school has an ELL program), students who received special services, many students who struggle with executive functioning skills, and many reluctant readers. Our fifth-grade teaching team is dedicated to helping all of our kids develop a lifelong love of reading. At our school, fifth-grade students are challenged to read 40 books each year. To meet this goal our students have a sustained silent reading block each day, and interactive read-aloud time, and are encouraged to read at home every day.
My Project
The high-interest fiction and historical fiction novels that I have chosen will help the reluctant readers in our fifth-grade cohort develop a lifelong love of reading. These books will be shared among five fifth grade classes. Many of our students love reading novels, but, it is especially important to be able to engage students who struggle with reading, and high-interest novels are a wonderful way to do just that! These engaging books are fun and exciting to read and help increase reluctant readers' interest in reading, and reading fluency. Additionally, the engaging historical fiction novels that I have chosen align with our social studies curriculum. The more that kids read, the more confident that they will become in their reading abilities. Strengthening their reading skills will transfer to increased success in all subject areas. We need exciting new novels that our students will be excited to read, novels that will ignite a passion for reading. Donations to this project will give our current and future fifth-grade students the gift of stories that will become a part of them forever, a gift that can never be taken away from them.
