I have a great bunch of students this year. They are hard workers, eager to please, and learning to love reading. However, this love of reading is not first nature to most of my seventh-grade learners. For most, there are so many things they'd rather be doing. They come into the seventh grade with the idea that reading is work and just another job to finish in the daily grind of school.
I have made it a professional goal of mine to make greater efforts to share my love of reading with students and get them hooked on good books.
Reading plays a substantial role in reading development and academic achievement, and I believe promoting intrinsic motivation should be given high priority in the curriculum.
My Project
My vision is to give my classroom library a complete makeover. I've analyzed my current selection, noted holes in genres and categories, and made it a goal of mine to acquire more high interest, relevant books for my students. I plan to purchase some new books, with the goal in mind of exhausting all options to help all of my students become motivated readers. I believe that purchasing books that are a better fit to my current population of students will help me with this process.
Donalyn Miller says, “I hear many teachers say that they cannot set aside time for students to read because they have so much content to cover, but to what end?
Because reading has more impact on students’ achievement than any other activity in school, setting aside time for reading must be the first activity we teachers write on our lesson plans, not the last. It is said that we make time for what we value, and if we value reading, we must make time for it” (The Book Whisperer, 2009, p. 52). I agree that reading is so important. We, as teachers, have the opportunity to create lifelong, motivated readers, and I am going to give it my best this year to provide high interest, quality books that my students can take the first steps with toward becoming true readers.
Students will benefit from high interest books, since they will be more apt to read them. More reading = higher academic achievement, high self-concepts, and higher motivation to read on their own and succeed in school and in life.
