Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students ages 10-15 with a variety of health, intellectual, sensory, and physical disabilities. The majority of my students are non-native English speakers, and we are a Title I (high poverty) school which adds additional layers of challenge they must overcome daily. My students all read below grade level, and we have been working hard to set rigorous, high goals for them.
My students all desire to reach their full potential, and I know that being able to read on level or close to grade level is key to them being successful in all of their classes, as well as life.
Since my students are behind their peers, we have set goals to grow at least two grade levels in reading this year in order to "double time" their progress. I am the only resource room English and Reading teacher in my school. My personal motivation is that if I have students all three years of middle school, even if they start at a kindergarten reading level in sixth grade, they will be at a place at the end of middle school where they can go out and thrive independently in the world.
My Project
My students are in middle school and are struggling readers. Reading picture books is not an option for them because it's stigmatizing. As a result, I've stocked my library with "high-interest, low-readability" books, or books with a low reading level that are emotionally and psychologically at my students' maturity level. My students have read through all of of the high-interest, low-readability books in my library and are desperate for more in their quest to become better readers. I surveyed my readers to find out what books they'd like, and my project includes the ones they wanted, such as Wonder, the graphic novels of The Lightning Thief and the Babysitter’s Club, and the Dog Tag books.
I understand that student engagement leads to learning, and these books will help students remain engaged in reading.
This will lead to motivation to continue becoming better readers. Reading at grade level is key for my students to be independent in school and in life, and these books will provide them the leveled support they need to gain literacy skills.
