My students need books that are on their reading level. Our school provides books for the classroom on grade level, but many of my students lack the ability to read on grade.

My Students

All of the children that feed into our school are very different but have one thing in common: they are all low income.

Our school is very special in that all students come from many different backgrounds and converge into our one school.

Each school that feeds into our school is located in a very distinct, different community. When our students come to our school, they are opened up to a whole new world. Some students in my room don't have this opportunity.

I love to hear the kids come in and say, "Are we reading today?!" with enthusiasm. Some of the kids in my class don't do this because there are no books they feel good about reading. I want students to be able to come into my classroom and know there is a book just for them in the room.

My Project

In my 6th grade reading classroom, I want all students to feel like they are in charge of their own reading.

I know that state testing is the big "important" thing we need to be focused on as educators, but more than that, I want my students to love reading like I did when I was their age.

I can actually remember the books I used to read when I was in 6th grade! I have tried many ways to connect with students and improve their love of reading. With these new books in my classroom, I would be able to reach even more readers and help grow their life-long love of reading!
