This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My library students know what they like--graphic novels, sports books, and diaries. These popular books are in very limited supply, and students get frustrated when they come to the library week after week and can never find the books they really want.
Our school serves a very diverse population of students from preK through 5th grade in Washington, D.C.
Although we have some fairly high achieving students, we also serve a large population of special needs kids and English language learners. Our students come from countries including Ethiopia, El Salvador, Liberia, Cameroon, Senegal, the Ukraine and Burkina Faso.
My Project
I am requesting a selection of books that could be characterized as high interest but low-to-moderate reading level. Each and every one of these books is guaranteed to fly off the shelves and spark or reignite a love of reading in children who are growing tired of the limited resources our school library has to offer.
We do not have a dedicated budget for new book purchases, and the bulk of our collection consists of books donated from public library sales, many of them several decades old. These books include titles children have requested, and series we may have had just one or two books in, all of which are falling apart from being in constant use.
Your donation will all go directly towards purchasing a book that will be greeted with great enthusiasm by the first lucky child who arrives in the library to check it out, and equally enthusiastically by the next child who gets it, and so on and so on.
