My students need 24 high-interest books and graphic novels because many of my students struggle with reading. Giving them books that are interesting to them will get them excited to read!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are faced with challenges most people never have to face. They find reading to be difficult and therefore are not interested. Many lack the resources to check out books that interest them at the library and lack books at home. They need books that they like, that they want to read.
My students are joyful, resilient children attending a high-poverty school in North Carolina.
They desire to achieve at the same level as students all over the country but at times lack the necessary resources. Many of my students begin the year already 1-2 grade levels behind. Some find reading to be difficult and often don't have access to check out or buy books that they are interested in. My students deserve the same opportunities as every other child in our country and giving them books that they actually like is a great way to get them excited and motivated about reading. They love football, basketball, and cheerleading. They love reading about people like them, they love reading about success stories and things they can become and dreams they can achieve.
My Project
Gaining access to high-interest books will get my students excited about reading and show them that reading can and should be fun. They will finally get the feeling of having a book that they won't be able to put down. My students need to make huge gains this year in order to catch up and leave 2nd and 3rd grade reading on grade level. Putting high-interest books in their hands is necessary in order to make these great gains. They will become better readers because they will fall in love with reading the way that so many other people have been fortunate to. They will see that reading doesn't have to be hard; it can be fun, exciting, and interesting.
Kids growing up in poverty deserve the same opportunities as every other child in this country.
They deserve books that interest them and deserve to fall in love with reading. Learning to read and becoming an excellent reader will open doors for them that had previously been shut simply based on their economic status.
