Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Book clubs are one of the ways that adults most often enjoy great literature. They are also a wonderful way to introduce young students to the joy of reading. Your donation can put engaging books into the hands of my students so that we can build a culture of shared learning.
My school serves a low-income community where a quality elementary education is tragically difficult to attain.
Ninety-three percent of our students receive free or reduced lunches. In my classroom, ninety-five percent of the students speak Spanish as a primary language. In 2007, my school received the National Distinguished Title I Award for its success in closing the achievement gap. Our motto of “College for Certain” imbues and informs every decision we make as educators.
My Project
I need a collection of high interest, early chapter books for my second grade class. Second graders are ready to read longer, more complicated stories. We will use the books to start book clubs. Partners will each read the same book. Then, they will have the opportunity to discuss what they read. This process fosters a sense of inquiry and independence.
I chose these books because they are titles in three popular series. It is important to have books on hand that students will be excited to read. This collection will cover a wide range of interests. In addition, it is helpful to have book in a series. Because students are familiar with the characters and writing style, they will be able to read more difficult books than they otherwise would.
Having a collection full of well-written, engaging books is one of the most powerful tools in teaching young students to read.
Unfortunately, due to severe budget cutbacks, we won't be getting any new books for some time. Your donation can make quality literature available to a wonderful group of students.
