My Students
I work in an elementary school with a high poverty rate, high mobility, and a dual language immersion program. My students have significant communication needs, including speech articulation disorders, receptive and expressive language disorders, and fluency disorders. Many of my students have difficulties remaining focused, and therefore require highly engaging materials in order to participate in therapy. My students have a lot to say, and I want to give them the best materials possible to bring out their amazing ideas.
My Project
Most of the books I'm requesting are part of a series, including the Moonbear books and Pete the Cat books. The repetition across books in a series is helpful for children who have difficulty remaining focused on listening to and talking about stories. These books provide rich opportunities for working on communication skills, and kids love them, which drastically improves our chances of successful therapy.
These high-interest books will help my students with communication disorders engage in their speech-language therapy.
Books can be used to target sequencing, narrative language, vocabulary, grammar skills, and speech sound production. For some kids with difficult behaviors and/or very significant needs, the right book can make a world of difference.
