Our students are simply amazing! They all have special needs of some type and face life with many challenges and struggles that many of us would take for granted. We have students that struggle to walk, struggle to express their wants and feelings, and require a bit more time to grasp basic concepts. Some students in the resource setting are higher functioning but still require speech supports. But that does not deter them. They continue to persevere until they get it. Our students are kind, loving, and excited to spend time together. They light up with every part of their being when they are happy or accomplish a task. They work hard to learn and practice their skills and lessons. They inspire us to keep going and do our best. They remind us that life is a wonderful adventure to be a part of. We love working with our students every day.
My Project
Special education students with severe disabilities need engaging communication and educational games to effectively learn. This project would fund our cluster special education classrooms and speech therapist with engaging games such as speak and listen microphones, sight word rings and learning shape dough mats.
Children with disabilities learn better when they are having fun; these interactive games will enhance our students' expressive and academic skills.
Our speech therapist integrates speech sessions into our daily reading groups. The items funded by this grant will encourage speech elicitation in our students with limited verbal abilities. For example, Verb Tense Instant Learning Center, Candy Land and Early Learning Activity Boxes will require students to produce a targeted word or sounds before taking a turn.
In our special education classrooms, students will work with academic language and math games that are funded by this grant to improve their sight word recognition, number identification and various language skills. For example, the Beginning Sounds Phonics Train manipulative and Learn to Count dough Mats will enable students to focus and engage in academic requirements.
Our special education students with communication and academic needs will benefit through the additional support of the items provided by this grant.
